Black Necked Stilt

These are one of the signature birds of the Napa-Sonoma Marshes and the San Pablo Bay National Wildlife Refuge.

A few things that stand out:

  • Long pink legs – among the longest legs relative to body size of any North American bird.
  • Black-and-white plumage – the adult on the right has the classic breeding plumage.
  • Straight, needle-like black bill – used to pick insects, small crustaceans, worms, and tiny fish from shallow water.

“The Black-necked Stilt is one of the iconic birds of the Napa marshes. Those remarkable pink legs allow it to forage in water too deep for most other shorebirds, feeding on insects, shrimp, and other tiny aquatic creatures.”
